The New York Mets put closer Jenrry Mejia on the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday.
Mejia was suppose to go into Monday’s game in the ninth inning. However he had a problem in the bullpen and Jerry Blevins went in the game instead. Team doctors examined Mejia and he had X-rays and MRI scans done. Mejia was diagnosed with posterior elbow inflammation and was given a cortisone shot, according to the New York Daily News. He won’t be able to pitch for at least ten days, so he was put on the disabled list retroactive to Sunday.
This isn’t the first time that Mejia has had issues with his elbow. In 2011 he had Tommy John surgery on his elbow. Last year Mejia was 6-6 with 28 saves, according to the Associated Press.
Mejia’s injury is the lasts blow for the Mets bullpen. Josh Edgin is out for the season after having Tommy John surgery. Vic Black is out due to shoulder tendinitis. Bobby Parnell, who has come back from having Tommy John surgery isn’t expected to be ready for weeks. Jeurys Familia could step into the closer role for the Mets.
The Mets have called up right-hander Erik Goeddel from Triple-A. He will fill the vacant spot in the Mets bullpen.
