Nothing comes easy for the NFL, even when it comes down to deflated footballs. That’s right, the NFL’s investigation into the Deflategate scandal that hovered over Super Bowl XLIX is still going on with no end in sight.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell met with Associated Press sports editors on Friday, reports The Boston Globe. He said that there is still no timeline for when the conclusions of Ted Wells’ investigation into the New England Patriots’ alleged use of underinflated footballs during their dominating win over the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC Championship game in January.
The report probably isn’t even going to come out this week. You would think the NFL would want this done before Thursday's NFL Draft, but apparently not.
“When he’s finished then he’ll give it to us and to the public in general,” Goodell said of the investigation.
When Goodell spoke with Sports Illustrated in March, he said that he thought Wells is “getting near the end.”
Deflategate was a major distraction for the Patriots leading up to the Super Bowl, which they eventually won. At this point, nearly 100 days after the AFC title game, Deflategate has turned into a national joke.
“I usually tell a bunch of jokes at these events, but with the Patriots in town, I was worried that 11 out of 12 of them would fall flat,” President Obama said when the Patriots visited the White House on Thursday.
Hopefully the NFL can get this finished before Sept. 10, when the Patriots start the 2015 season with a game against the Steelers, but we’re not holding our breath.
