It wasn’t a perfect pitch, but New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady’s ceremonial first pitch was a pretty good way for the Boston Red Sox to start their 2015 campaign at Fenway Park.
Brady is, of course, coming off of the Super Bowl XLIX victory against the Seattle Seahawks so he could take some time off from football. Patriots head coach Bill Belichick and owner Bob Kraft were also there, along with the franchise’s fourth Lombardi Trophy.
The pitch went to the left of home plate, bouncing up into designated hitter David Ortiz’s glove. Thankfully Ortiz was in the right position to make the pitch look better than it was.
It was disappointing that the pitch wasn’t perfect, since Brady had actually considered playing baseball before he committed to football. As MLB.com notes, he was drafted by the Expos in the 18th round of the 1995 First-Year Player draft.
Brady did a bit better in the batting cages, hitting a few pitches from Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez. He also took a selfie with Ortiz.
While Brady had a good day at Fenway, the Sox had an even better one. They won the home opener against the Washington Nationals 9-4.
As for that No. 5 Brady was wearing on his shirt all day? Maybe he’s promising fans that No. 4 won’t be his last Lombardi Trophy.
