Despite the cold and damp weather around 30,000 runners participated in the 119TH Boston Marathon on Monday and proved that they are Boston Strong.
The Washington Post noted that Kenya’s Caroline Rotich was the first to cross the finish line in the women’s division with an unofficial time of 2:24:55.
“I have been waiting for this and training and training,” said the first-time winner. “I feel like, ‘Yeah I want to do this and I can’t let it go.'”
For the men, Lelisa Desisa of Ethiopia won the event for the second time since 2013 with a time 2:19:17.
“I am happy to win, No. 1,” he said when he crossed the finish line.
Switzerland’s Marcel Hug won the men’s wheelchair division with the speedy time of 1:29:53 and Tatyana McFadden won the women’s wheelchair division for the third time.
After McFadden won, she gave her wreath to the family of Martin Richard, the 8-year-old child who was one of three people killed in the bombings two years ago.
On this day, McFadden summed up the Boston Strong motto when she said that the day was all about “strength” and “courage.”
