Zayn Malik has broken his Twitter silence since quitting One Direction, thanking fans for their support since his statement confirming his departure.

Malik left the band at the end of last month, saying in a statement at the time “it’s now the right time for me to leave the band” after five years, saying he wanted to “be a normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight.”

He prompted the trending hashtag “#ZaynWeveMissedYou” when he took to Twitter on Monday to write, “Wanna say thanks to everyone that's been there for me over the last few weeks, love you all.. you know who you are x,” adding, “The x is a kiss by the way ha it's not a mystery .. sorry to any confused ... “

People reports Malik attended London’s Asian Awards on Friday, where he won the award for outstanding contribution to music. It was his first public appearance since he quit, where he debuted a new shaved haircut.

Simon Cowell admitted while on the Late Late Show last week that he wanted to “jump off a cliff” when Malik approached him with wanting to quit.
