The Voice started off with the blinds, gone through the battles, slayed the knockout rounds and now the top six contestants are performing live for a spot to advance. The coaches are working closely with their vocalists for a spot in the finals. Each contestant was able to perform two songs and one of the performances was dedicated to their mothers in honor of Mother’s Day.
Kicking off the night was India Carney from Team Christina. Carney put her own spin on “Glory” which was originally performed by John Legend and Common. Starting off the comments was Williams who said that Carney had an incredible comeback. Levine said that at this point in the competition you are required to step up and be an artist and Carney did that. Shelton added on that it was a great performance and her mission was accomplished with his performance. Coach Christina said that Carney really made the song her own and that if anyone wanted to sing that song, it would be performed that way.
The last remaining artist from Team Adam is Joshua Davis. Davis put his own unique spin on “Desire” by U2. Williams said that this was one of his best songs to date and it looked like Davis was really happy doing something different and up-tempo. Coach Adam said that Davis made it clear that he was having fun and just performing on stage and that natural energy is why he should be moving forward to the semi-finals.
Following Davis was Koryn Hawthorne who chose to sing, “Everybody Hurts” from R.E.M. in honor of her mother. Shelton said that Hawthorne truly gets lost in her performance and it is a sight to see. Williams added that it is unbelievable how her spirit comes through and that she really does deserve the term “inspirational singer.”
Next up was Team Christina’s Kimberly Nichole who dedicated her performance of “Free Fallin’” by Tom Petty. Levine said that with Nichole it doesn’t matter what song she sings, she is able to knock it out the park. Aguilera said that this performance really embodied freedom and being joyous and that is how Nichole sang this song.
Meghan Linsey followed Nichole and was sang James Taylor’s “Steamroller Blues.” Aguilera started off the coaches’ comments by saying that she would be impressed if she was Linsey’s coach and that was great. Williams said that what intrigued him about Linsey was that she was a soul singer from Nashville and that was shown tonight. Coach Blake said simply, “You sang the crap out of it.” Williams jumped in and added at the end, everyone in Nashville needs to vote for Linsey now.
The next vocalist was Sawyer Fredricks representing Team Pharrell. Fredricks sang “Shine On,” in honor of his mother. Levine added that Fredricks is a very talented individual and he is proud of him for this simple and focused performance. Coach Pharrell said that this performance showed what incredible power and how undeniably talented he is.
Kimberly Nichole returned to the stage and took on “Dirty Diana” by Michael Jackson.
Williams said that Nichole just had her first true rock ‘n’ roll moment in front of the world. Aguilera said that this is what the show needs and that she really embodies how to perform and that she is truly a rock star.
Following Carney was Sawyer Fredricks who sang, “Take Me To the River.” Shelton said that all Fredricks needs to do is just stand there and sing. Williams added that Fredricks really worked the stage and that everyone in America should do what feels right and vote for him earning a spot in the semi-finals.
Closing out the night Meghan Linsey from Team Blake. Linsey sang “Amazing Grace.” Aguilera said that the song choice was gorgeous and beautiful but wondered if Shelton had managed to win the competition again! Shelton said that in the moment the whole world stopped to listen to that song and that there is a new sheriff in town with this show.
The results will be announced tomorrow night on NBC and will feature many Voice alumni returning to the stage to perform.
