Ahead of Cate Blanchett's film The Price of Salt, during which she secretly falls in love with a woman in the 1950s, the Oscar-winning actress has revealed she’s had lesbian relationships of her own.

While promoting the film, Blanchett was asked about having intimate relationships with women. She asked "On film – or in real life?" then confirmed to Variety she’s had encounters with women "many times” in her personal life.

Price of Salt, also starring Rooney Mara, premieres at the Cannes Film Festival on May 17. It's based on the Patricia Highsmith's novel of the same name.

As research for the role, she "read a lot of girl-on-girl books from the period.”

Back in March it was revealed that Blanchett and her husband of nearly 20 years, Andrew Upton, adopted a baby girl. They already have three sons; Dashiell John, 13, Roman Robert, 10, and Ignatius Martin, 6.
