Former Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice’s domestic violence charge has been dismissed by a judge.

NBC News noted that New Jersey Judge Michael A. Donio signed an order Thursday dismissing the charge since Rice completed his pretrial intervention program.

"I was just presented with a dismissal order from Prosecutor [James] McClain -- which means that Ray Rice has successfully completed all of his terms and conditions of his PTI -- therefore based on the Prosecutors recommendation I will be signing Mr. Rice's dismissal of his case today," Judge Donio wrote in an email to ABCNews.com.

Rice was required to attend anger-management counseling and check in with a probation officer for a year in order to avoid prosecution.

The 28-year-old garnered national headlines and outrage in September when he was seen on video punching and knocking out his then-fiancée Janay Palmer in an Atlantic City casino elevator.

Rice was suspended for his actions and released by the Ravens. He was later reinstated, however, a team has yet to sign him.

The video opened up a dialogue in the NFL about domestic violence and the league announced that harsher penalties will be enacted for any offenders.
