Eddie Vedder performed on one of David Letterman’s last Late Show tapings before his retirement, taking a walk down memory lane by singing “Better Man.”
His fellow Pearl Jam members were not there to assist him, but Paul Shaffer and the CBS Orchestra helped him out instead.
EW reports Vedder’s first appearance on the Late Show was in 1996 and he’s returned several times since then. “Better Man” is from Pearl Jam’s Vitalogy album, from 1994.
Although the meaning of the song is much different, Vedder’s performance of the song served as a type of tribute to Letterman, suggesting there’s no “better man” to replace him. He got so into it that he broke a guitar string, WSJ reports.
Bob Dylan will act as musical guest on Tuesday night, with Letterman taking his final bow on Wednesday. Vedder was originally slated to be the last musical guest but allowed Dylan to replace him when the iconic singer expressed desire.
