Just hours after it was announced that Manny Pacquiao will undergo surgery for a tear in his right shoulder, Floyd Mayweather Jr. said that he would fight him again once he recovers.
Mayweather sent a text message to ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith that he would give the Filipino boxer a rematch.
"I will fight him in a year after his surgery," Mayweather wrote.
After Saturday night’s bout in which Mayweather won by a unanimous decision, Pacquiao revealed that he was dealing with the injury. While some thought that may have been an excuse after being defeated, it turned out he did sustain a tear in his rotator cuff three weeks prior while training for the match. He was advised by doctors that if closely monitored, he would still be able to get into the ring on May 2.
"One week before the fight my shoulder was getting better and better," Pacquiao explained of the decision.
The AFP reported Monday that Pacquiao could face disciplinary action from Nevada boxing officials for not disclosing the injury before the match. He may receive a possible fine or suspension for not filling out his questionnaire properly on Friday.
The timetable for his return after the surgery would be nine to 12 months, which fits the time Mayweather said he would fight him again. But would fans pay and tune in for a rematch given how underwhelming their first bout turned out.
