Fox TV Group co-chairs Dana Walden and Gary Newman were on the hot seat this morning after the network unveiled its Fall 2015 schedule and which shows would surprisingly be held back for January. There were three main shows to talk about, including the biggest hit of the 2014-15 season, Empire, and the return of The X-Files.

Empire premiered in the second half of the 2014-15 season and only featured 12 episodes. For its second season, Fox has ordered 18 episodes, which will air in two blocks without repeats inbetween. The show is also staying in the Wednesday, 9 p.m. timeslot.

“We’d be crazy to move it,” Newman told reporters before the upfront presentation to advertisers, reports TheWrap.

While Empire was the most-watched new show of the current season, it wasn’t enough to get Fox out of the basement among the broadcast networks. But Fox is banking on the show’s continued success, especially since they have made every episode of season one available on various platforms.

“We do believe there is an opportunity to grow the show, so we have been focused on catch-up,” Fox TV Group COO Joe Earley added.

Fox also said that Ne-Yo and Timbaland are writing new music for the season.

Another big topic for Fox is the six-episode return of The X-Files. However, the show won’t air until January, with one episode airing after the NFL’s NFC Championship Game and another airing the day after.

“We thought a lot about how to eventize bringing the show back, from a scheduling perspective,” Walden explained when asked why they gave such a well-known property a big launch, notes HitFix. “We've got a lot going on in midseason on our schedule and it felt like the best way to capitalize on all of the opportunities was to give The X-Files, something that's so highly anticipated, that fans have been literally clamoring for for a decade, giving it the best, maximum expose in that post-NFC game time period and then starting the next day with the first of the next five episodes.”

Lastly, Fox is also cancelling American Idol. It will get one final season, starting in January 2016. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Walden called it a “pretty emotional” decision. Walden and Newman didn’t give specifics, but they promised nostalgic “surprises” for the final season like appearances from past judges and performers.
