Just when you think Game of Thrones has pushed the envelope too far, the writers find more ways to gross us out, especially those of us who have not read George R.R. Martin’s books. While the last scene in this week’s “Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken” episode drove some viewers crazy, Sophie Turner - who had to actually act out the scene - said she loved it.
In the episode, Turner’s Sansa Stark marries the show’s currently most vile character, Ramsay Bolton (Iwan Rheon). After the wedding, she is raped, with Theon Greyjoy (Alfie Allen) forced to watch.
Before the episode was filmed, Turner spoke with Entertainment Weekly and was excited about getting through it.
“When I read that scene, I kinda loved it,” Turner told EW. “I love the way Ramsay had Theon watching. It was all so messed up. It’s also so daunting for me to do it. I’ve been making [producer Bryan Cogman] feel so bad for writing that scene: ‘I can’t believe you’re doing this to me!’ But I secretly loved it.”
Turner did agree with fans who are surprised that they would do this to Sansa, who has been through a lot during the show’s run. She liked the idea that Sansa didn’t know how crazy Ramsay was until their wedding night.
The scene did cause controversy after it aired, just like every shocking moment in the series. However, it didn’t actually happen this way in the novels, so Martin was pestered by fans to comment on it. The author took to his blog to stress that he would not comment on it.
“There have been differences between the novels and the television show since the first episode of season one. And for just as long, I have been talking about the butterfly effect. Small changes lead to larger changes lead to huge changes,” Martin wrote.
