J.K. Rowling has made it clear that she supports gay rights, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise to her many fans that she celebrated Saturday, when Ireland became the first country in the world to approve of gay marriage by popular vote. Her happiness also caught the attention of the infamous Westboro Baptist Church which picked a fight with the wrong muggle author.
Rowling tweeted a meme on Saturday to a follower, suggesting that Dumbledore and The Lord of the Rings character Gandalf could now get married in Ireland. This apparently got the Westboro Baptist Church really angry. After all, how dare Rowling suggest that two fictional characters should get married?
First, the WBC said they would picket the wedding if it happened. Then, they actually made a Vine video of two men poorly dressed as Gandalf and Dumbledore refusing to get married. Because, you know, nothing says “I’m serious about this” like dressing up in a bathrobe and waving a stick at a book.
Rowling actually responded to one of the tweets, writing, “Alas, the sheer awesomeness of such a union in such a place would blow your tiny bigoted minds out of your thick sloping skulls.”
One of Rowling’s fans told her that she shouldn’t give the hate group a moment of her time, but she said she had a good reason for it. “I don't care about WBC. I think it's important that scared gay kids who aren't out yet see hate speech challenged,” she wrote.
