Lorne Michaels may have deep ties with NBC, but his new project is going to air on HBO. Brothers in Atlanta is a new comedy series from the Saturday Night Live creator that will star Maya Rudolph and Jaden Smith.
The project is being written by Diallo Riddle and Bashir Salahuddin, who will also star in the series, reports The Hollywood Reporter. They will play Langston and Moose, best friends and struggling entertainers living in Atlanta. Rudolph will play Moose’s boss and a former R&B star. Smith is set to star as Langston’s annoying teen neighbor.
Executive producers include Michaels, Andrew Singer of Broadway Video, Riddle, Salahuddin and Tim Story of The Story Co., reports Deadline. Story (Ride Along) will direct the pilot.
Brothers in Atlanta received a series order from HBO. Michaels previously produced an HBO pilot with Riddle and Salahuddin that was also set in Atlanta, but that did not go to series.
HBO has been beefing up its comedy slate with new projects that include High Maintenance and Sarah Jessica Parker’s Divorce. The network is also the home of Girls, Veep, Silicon Valley and the upcoming The Brink.
