Jane The Virgin began with a scene of Jane from five years previously when she was on her way to a summer career fair. However, it looks like she was given the wrong time by her nemesis, Stephanie Kovakovitch, who had found her day planner. Jane was later determined to have her revenge by doing well in life, especially since Stephanie later dropped out of college. Then a year later, she is seen with Michael as she reminds him about the date of her four-year reunion she decided to plan.
In the present, Jane no longer wants to go due to the fact that she feels she hasn’t accomplished anything and is just an unemployed single mom-to-be. Lina tries to convince her to go, even bringing up that an old crush named Alex Mendez is going. Jane sees his yearbook picture talking to her and then Stephanie’s does to. Lina also mentions the teachers that loved Jane. Xiomara also comes and tells Jane she did have good accomplishments such as writing a script for a telenovela. Jane relents and decides to go.
Jane asks Lina to go get her some lip-gloss when her phone rings. Xiomara tells Jane it’s the custody lawyer, but she doesn’t answer. She tells Xiomara she still has to tell Rafael about her request for primary custody of the baby.
Rafael is talking to Luisa about the Maracy Board in Madrid, the location of a Hotel conglomerate built by their deceased father. The board wants to work toward dissolving the company, but Rafael doesn’t want that since his father always turned them down. Luisa, who is there with Juicy Jordan, feels that he should move on. Rafael is distracted by an e-mail from Jane asking to meet up. He hasn’t seen her in two weeks and immediately agrees. Rafael tells his sister that he made a mistake in letting Jane go.
Jane is walking into the living room where her mom and Alba are. She is getting ready for a visit from her father, who has been busy filming. When he arrives, he gives Jane a big hug and a present, which turns out to be a gaudy necklace. Rogelio greets Alba warmly, but when he tries to greet Xiomara, they give each other awkward cheek kisses. Jane goes to leave with the heavy necklace on.
Rogelio tells Xiomara that a theater director named Mitchell Murray is directing their Las Vegas show and they need to work out details. He is excited because it means he will get an E.G.O.T. aka Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony. When he says all he has left after a Tony is an “EGO,” Alba teases him about having that.
Jane goes to the Marbella and ends up running into Petra and Magda. She tells Magda she should be in prison and leaves upset. Petra mentions to her mother that Rafael left his computer open, meaning they timed the run in on purpose. Petra tells her mother that she has been getting closer to Rafael and is hoping Jane won’t be a barrier.
Upstairs, Rafael is eager to see Jane until he finds out she wants primary custody. She tells him she doesn’t want the baby around Luisa, Petra, or Magda. Rafael tells her that Luisa has met with the police and she can ask Michael. He offers to get an apartment so he can see the baby and asks her to reconsider.
Xiomara and Jane talk about Rafael’s offer and Xiomara urges her daughter not to let anger dictate what she does. Jane brings up Magda and how she is free while they have medical bills to pay for Alba. Her phone rings and Jane talks to Michael, who tells her Luisa has been cooperating. After Jane thanks him, he tells her about a commendation he is receiving and asks her to go. Jane agrees and tells her mom. When Xiomara gives her a look, Jane points out he said as friends.
Petra goes to see Rafael and notices he looks upset. She asks if he’s okay since she saw Jane leave upset. When he won’t speak, she tells him she is there to talk as a friend if he needs.
Jane is trying to work, but she has the urge to open the boxes that are sitting in the baby’s crib. Eventually, she opens one box and sees an adorable duck bathrobe. She then spends the next two hours organizing baby things, much to Alba’s delight when she comes in. Alba is thrilled to see she is nesting and Jane tells her there is no place on her calendar to nest, then holds up a pair of baby booties.
At rehearsals for the show, Rogelio and Xiomara are doing well until they have to hold each other during a part of the routine. He storms off saying the choreography is bad. However, when Xiomara goes to confront him, he claims he felt her desire for him, much to Xiomara’s shock.
At the awards ceremony, we find out Michael helped to apprehend 22 people working for Sin Rostro. However, he appears conflicted since he let Nadine go. After the ceremony, he hugs Jane and thanks her for coming. A photographer takes their picture and Michael asks if she wants to have dinner. Jane tells him about the high school reunion and he jokes about having a planner she gave him before telling her to watch out for the “mean girls.”
That night, Jane is in the lobby when she runs into Petra. The other woman asks to talk and she tells Jane she knows Rafael has been miserable and she wants to ensure Jane she would never harm the baby. Jane is having trouble trusting her since she went back to being cold after she tried to help her once. Petra says she is not trying to gain anything, although secretly it is to look like the bigger person, and assures Jane again she wouldn’t do anything. Jane leaves when Lina arrives.
Lina tells Jane to change her necklace and they go to get their name badges. Jane breathes deeply when she sees her says “Most likely to succeed.” Lina points out she also didn’t do what she wanted and that she wasn’t on a reality show.
Jane speaks to people at her reunion, but things get awkward when she brings up the baby and everyone focuses on that rather than her writing. When Alex Mendez comes to talk to her, things seem fine until she stands up and he sees she is pregnant before rushing off, much to Jane’s chagrin.
Xiomara is telling her mother about Rogelio’s behavior. Alba wonders if she was hitting on him and Xiomara says she wasn’t. When she tells Alba about the lift, Alba tells her that Rogelio is afraid of heights but his ego would keep him from admitting it. She tells Xiomara a story about an aunt who was afraid of heights and died without getting her over it. Apparently, she was buried on a cliff.
At the reunion, Jane is giving a speech and it appears she has a meltdown where she tells everyone she just doesn’t want to be seen as a mom. However, it was all in her head and she actually gives a short and sweet speech about life being unexpected, even though she wasn’t completely feeling like her words meant much.
Jane is leaving the bathroom when Stephanie approaches her. The girl apologizes for being mean to her in high school and Jane brings up that she figured it was because of Jane’s mom and her dad. Stephanie then tells her she only spread the rumor because a guy she liked asked Jane to junior prom. She had used Xiomara as a vulnerable spot for Jane. After Stephanie leaves, Jane goes over to a classroom and remembers doing well in school when Lina comes to find her.
Xiomara confronts Rogelio about being afraid of heights. He tries to deny it until she brings up standing at the edge of the Grand Canyon. He relents and tells her that he is afraid, but doesn’t want to look bad to the director since he wants to be in a play in Jesus Christ Superstar. Rogelio tells her he tried everything to make his fear go away.
At home, Jane is trying to work when she gets a text from Michael. She tells him about the reunion and they have a good time texting when Jane tells him too much is going on to type. They have a nice talk on the phone where Jane describes how she is feeling overwhelmed and Michael admits her novel schedule is crazy and she should make a new plan. At the end, they both are feeling like this talk is just like old times and Jane gets a feeling inside that causes her to hang up.
Jane tells Xiomara and Alba the next day that she has decided to take a graduate program for writing that will help her with her goals while raising the baby. They both think her idea is good and ask how it came about. Jane admits it was Michael helping before leaving for her baby appointment.
The doctor tells Jane she is 10 percent effaced, meaning she is on the right path for when the baby will come. Rafael is taking a work trip and asks if the baby will come within the next three days, but the doctor assures him the baby won’t come then. After she leaves, Jane tells Rafael she wants to talk.
At rehearsals, Mitchell Murray wants to make the hydraulic lift go a bit higher, much to Rogelio’s concern. Murray tells them to get on the lift and when they do, Xiomara feels that Rogelio is scared and immediately tells the director that she is scared of heights. The director is annoyed and they get the platform down where Rogelio thanks her.
Petra and Rafael talk, where he tells her while Jane didn’t think Petra was a threat, she still wasn’t going to drop custody. He is thankful Petra tried to help, though, and they end up holding hands. However, Rafael tells her he can’t do anything since so much is going on. Petra appears to understand and it looks like she has a heart afterall. However, she soon goes to her mother and tells her she is going to admit that she pushed Alba and that Petra forced her to confess so she can look like the good guy.
We see Jane and Rafael hug as Jane says “It worked!” Magda is in jail and a flashback shows that Jane used Stephanie’s information about vulnerability to use Petra’s love for Rafael to turn in her own mother. Jane had also told Rafael she didn’t want to keep the baby from him. Jane apologizes for how ugly things got and tells him that she was just mad about how things ended. She thinks they are better off as friends, even though Rafael still loves her.
Xiomara, Jane, and Alba are celebrating when Jane goes to answer a knock on the door. It is Michael coming to celebrate. Meanwhile, back at the hotel, Rafael tells Luisa he isn’t going to the meeting and that he wants to be there if the baby is born. Luisa asks about Jane and urges Rafael to call her. Jordan also tells Rafael the same thing so he does. However, Xiomara sees the call and knowing Michael and Jane are outside, sends it to voicemail.
Jane and Michael talk and she asks if he is still okay being a friend. Michael admits if the world was perfect, he would, but he is okay being a friend if she is. Jane assures him she is, even though in her head she’s only trying to tell herself that is true.
