Last night’s season finale of Jane The Virgin began with a flashback of Xiomara giving birth to Jane. She is tired and has been pushing for a while when her mother urges her to push, saying, “I’ll yank that kid out myself!” Xiomara finally gives it all she can and she delivers her baby girl before telling her mom the name she decided on.
In the present, Jane and Xiomara are talking about the upcoming show in Vegas. Xiomara is worried about leaving so close to Jane’s due date. However, Jane assures her that she has not had any contractions and she is only dilated one centimeter. Since it is Rogelio’s big night, she urges her mom to go, but decides to play a trick on her mom by pretending to go into labor.
Luisa and Rafael are talking about Jane. She is still pushing him gently to admit to Jane that he made a mistake, but apparently Jane had told him she was glad he broke up with her when he did. At the same time, Xiomara and Jane also talk about the situation. Jane reveals that the two of them shared a moment at the last ultrasound picture when the technician said the baby had some hair. They were about to take a selfie when Petra called Rafael’s phone, ruining the moment and reminding Jane they were better apart.
While talking to his sister, Rafael tells her he plans on buying Petra out of the hotel and he has an idea in how to get her to sell her shares. At her house, Rogelio and Jane are waiting for Xiomara so they can go to the airport to leave. When he goes to find her, Jane gets a text from Michael asking about dinner. She texts back that she has to apply for grad school. After texting with him, Xiomara comes and asks who it was. Jane says it was Michael and reminds her they are being friendly, as much as she is just trying to tell herself that. She bids her parents off to the airport.
Rafael and Petra are together and he is putting on a show by checking her out. Petra tells him she was thinking of getting rid of the recovery suites, since it was a reminder of Sin Rostro and what happened to his father. Rafael agrees and then asks her to go to dinner. They are interrupted when her assistant, Scott, comes in to tell Rafael he has a call from Miami-Dade fertility. Petra worries it could be something else, but Rafael assures her it could be a billing issue. When Scott leaves, Rafael asks Petra to dinner at a place called Trivolo’s, which fills Petra with excitement.
Meanwhile, Jane is at home when Michael comes over with cheeseburgers from a place called River Green. She tells him grad school apps are not going well since she missed the deadline. Michael is surprised she isn’t pushing for it and he encourages her to apply anyway. He helps her with an admissions essay and as they talk, Jane suddenly gets a contraction. She tries to breathe as Michael, who has no idea what he is doing, times how long it is and gets her to breathe. When he notices two came within a minute apart, he suggests going to the hospital.
Jane and Rafael are at the doctor and he assures Jane she only had Braxton-Hicks contractions. He tells her the difference between those and the real ones. Jane is grateful Rafael made it and he tells her it was a good way to practice since he arrived in less than ten minutes.
Outside the hospital room, Rafael tells Michael it was fine and he can leave. However, Michael wants to see Jane since he drove her there. Rafael and Michael argue over the fact that Michael still wants Jane and she sees them fighting. They ask about taking her home, but she tells them in an annoyed tone she can call her abuela.
Petra goes to see Magda, who is bitter about being stuck in prison. Petra wants to tell her about her date with Rafael and is confused when her mother is acting so negative. Magda points out it is most likely since she is “in prison.”
Jane is at home when Rafael comes over. He wants to apologize but when he begins to go on about Michael being close to her, she tells him it is no longer his business. Rafael blindsides her when he admits he made a mistake breaking up with her and that he still loves Jane. She is upset and points out that it won’t make everything that happened go away and tells him to leave.
Later on, Jane is on the phone with her mother and assures her that she is feeling fine. She is on her way to a meeting with the graduate admissions person when she sees Michael at the door. He apologizes for the night before and he gives her a playlist that will help her when she really is in labor. Michael asks if he is right to be feeling something between them, but that he is comfortable being friends. However, when Jane says he is a safe choice, he admits that isn’t what he wants.
Michael goes home only to find Nadine in his home. He checks her for weapons before asking what she wants. She wants him to make a deal with her.
Jane is at her admissions interview and is giving the man facts about how in previous years, they had accepted more students than they did this year. But before she can finish her speech, Jane feels contractions once more and they appear to be more uncomfortable.
Nadine and Michael are talking, as he is still hesitant about her being there. But she reveals that she knows where to find Dr. Moncado, the plastic surgeon who performed the facial surgeries, and it is rumored he also changed Sin Rostro’s face. She was able to get these details since Sin Rostro’s people thought she still worked for them. Michael agrees to check out her story and places her in handcuffs.
Jane is still having contractions and has to leave the meeting. She gets on the bus and calls her mom, as her contractions are now about eight minutes apart. A woman on the bus, Gabrielle, talks to Xiomara to let her know how far apart the contractions are. They need to get her to the hospital.
Rafael is on the phone with Petra having found out Jane is in labor. He has to cancel their dinner date. In the bus, Gabrielle tries to get the driver to go to the hospital when Xiomara asks to speak to him. She tells the stunned man that she had Jane within an hour of her contractions being five minutes apart and wonders if he wants her daughter to give birth on the bus. The driver makes his way to the hospital, but goes so slowly that Gabrielle asks if he ever saw the movie Speed. While this is going on, Jane looks up at a billboard of her dad and imagines him getting her to breathe through it. She gets off the bus and waves at everyone as the billboard tells her to “bring another angel into this world.”
In the hospital room, Jane is with Alba and Rafael. She is dilated six centimeters, but hasn’t been progressing very quickly. Back in Las Vegas, Xiomara tells Rogelio about Jane being in labor, but being unable to find any flights so she got a plane ticket for the next morning. Rogelio storms off, confusing Xiomara.
Jane knows she isn’t progressing so she urges Alba to go home and rest since she lives nearby. Alba relents and leaves while Rafael stays with Jane. He starts to talk about earlier, but Jane doesn’t want to focus on that right now and brings up the fact they need to narrow down a name.
Rogelio is at the slots when Xiomara comes in. He tells her he is upset because she thought he only cared about his show when he wanted to go home and be with Jane. Nothing was more important to family to him. Meanwhile in the hospital, Rafael and Jane come up with Nina for a name. However, Rafael wanted the baby to have his name too and is surprised when Jane says it would be her last name. Since Jane is not married, it wasn’t what she thought of so they decide to compromise and have Solano be part of the baby’s middle name.
Rafael asks her to be 50% less mad at him and he reveals to her that he stayed home instead of going to Spain because she was dilated and he didn’t want to take the chance of missing the baby’s birth. Jane sees he wants to be a good dad and involved and she begins to feel better.
Xiomara finds Rogelio and shows him a photoshopped image she made of Rogelio in the delivery room when Jane was born. She makes amends and tells him not to be upset anymore since he is family. They are about to head up to bed when a group of fans come by asking if they can by Rogelio a drink. They decide to stick around for a drink. Or two.
Meanwhile, Michael and the police raid a building where they got intel on where Dr. Moncada was hiding. However, when they find his dead body, Michael realizes they got there too late.
Xiomara and Rogelio wake up with hangovers and are confused about their whereabouts. Then Xiomara sees a text on her phone and remembers Jane is in labor and they have to go.
Jane and Rafael are with Alba. At this point, Jane is eight centimeters dilated and close to giving birth. While this is going on, Nadine and Michael talk. He reminds her cops don’t like dealing with dirty cops, especially since they now have no more leads to Sin Rostro. He offers to talk to their boss.
Jane is wondering where her mom is and realizes her mom won’t get there in time. Rafael suggests they call Michael to provide a police escort so he leaves to go call him. When Michael gets the call, he tells Nadine that Jane is in labor and he has to go. But when he leaves, Nadine is able to grab a key for the handcuffs he used to hold her in the house.
Jane is pushing, but having a hard time. She is exhausted and feeling weak. When Xiomara comes in, she rushes to her side and encourages her daughter to push. She echoes the same words her mom did during her own labor and Jane finally gives a big push before delivering a- surprise- baby boy. Jane holds her baby boy close, whose tiny hand gently touches her lip. Surrounded by her family and Rafael, flashbacks of the time leading up to the birth play out and the narrator says “Jane’s heart was full.”
Later on, Rafael is holding the baby and tells her this is what he wanted, was for them to be a family. However, while she says she will think about it, Jane is solely focused on her little boy. When her family gathers around her, Jane tells them the baby’s name is Mateo Gloriano Rogelio Solano Villanueva. Xiomara is in tears hearing the baby’s name, as Mateo is her own father’s name. Rogelio is touched the baby is named after him.
Scott is talking to Petra and telling her that Miami-Dade called again, but Rafael is busy with his son. He said the doctor would talk to Mr. Solano’s wife, so Petra gets on the phone. What she hears causes her to go find Rafael. However, before she goes into his office, she overhears him telling Luisa about manipulating her.
Michael comes in to meet baby Mateo. He tells Jane the baby looks like her before telling her that he doesn’t want her to worry about their earlier conversation and he only wants her to focus on the baby, which is what she needed to hear.
Michael goes home and sees Nadine is gone. He places a call to his boss to let him know the plan worked and mentions putting a tracker on her phone.
Petra meets with Diane, the doctor on the phone. It turns out, the phone call was to tell Rafael that his sperm sample had been split into two vials and they found the second vial. Petra has decided not to reveal this information to Rafael and takes the sperm sample to hold onto.
Xiomara and Rogelio are in the hospital hallway as he searches through his bag for some concealer. He finds a CD with their names on it and puts it on the laptop. Xiomara hopes it’s not a sex tape, but as they see themselves walking down an aisle in church, they are horrified to see that they are now married.
Jane is holding Mateo when a Nurse named Helen walks in. She tells Jane they need to do a hearing test on the baby and it will only take a few minutes. Nurse Helen takes Mateo as Jane looks on. But as she walks toward the testing room, she goes in another direction and cuts the baby’s hospital bracelet off his ankle. Carrying him outside in her jacket, Helen takes the baby to a woman waiting in a car and hands him to her. We don’t see the woman, but the sound of her whistling matches Rose’s voice. Sin Rostro has kidnapped Jane’s baby.
We’ll have to wait until October to find out what happens. See you this fall, Jane The Virgin fans.
