Melissa Rivers sat down with Today’s Hoda Kotb for an interview at 92nd Street Y, where she remembered her late mother, Joan Rivers, and talked candidly about the issues at Fashion Police.
The show’s demise was like a domino effect when Giuliana Rancic was accused of racist remarks, which lead to Kelly Osbourne then Kathy Griffin quitting the show.
Rivers has a big problem with Griffin’s statement upon leaving, saying she basically “sh-t all over my mother's legacy” with her wording.
"I'm just going to say it wasn't a match on a lot of levels,” she said, adding of the statement, “I know that that was not an intentional reading of it, but that's how I felt. But I know that wasn't how it was intended."
She went on to say of Rivers, "I understand what you're doing — you're trying to save yourself, but don't crap all over my mother to do it."
Fashion Police, which is on hiatus until the fall as they figure out how to piece it back together, was “the last piece I had of my mother and I working together,” Rivers said, so it holds a special place in her heart.
So when Zendaya accused Rancic of racism and the backlash ensued, she “felt like I was Humpty Dumpty on my knees glueing it back together, or trying to at least find the pieces."
