Natalie Portman spoke at her alma mater, Harvard University, to deliver a commencement speech to the class of 2015. In it, the Oscar winner got personal about her own career path and education.
Portman added some humor in it too, admitting on her own graduation day she knew many of her fellow students were hungover or “freshly high” when Will Ferrell spoke as the commencement speaker.
The actress 33, went on to talk about her feelings on the day she graduated, fresh off the success of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace.
“I felt like there had been some mistake," she said, Daily News reports. "That I wasn't smart enough to be in this company, and that every time I opened my mouth, I would have to prove I wasn't just a dumb actress.”
She exposed one of her biggest anxieties about getting into the prestigious school, saying she was afraid “people would assume I had gotten in just for being famous.”
During her sophomore year, she explained, she had to some “dark moments” because of several reasons.
“Some combination of being 19, dealing with my first heartbreak, taking birth control pills that have since been taken off the market for their depressive side effects, and spending too much time missing daylight during winter months led me to some pretty dark moments,” she said.
However, those moments set her up for dealing with other obstacles in her life, particularly her challenging Oscar-winning role in Black Swan.
