The real-life Alex Vause from Orange is the New Black, Cleary Wolters, now has her own memoir coming out called Out of Orange. She promoted the book during a new interview and shot down any notion she had a real life romance with Piper Kerman like it’s played out in the show.
Wolters appeared on HuffPost Live and talked about the few similarities between herself and Vause (Laura Prepon), but noted there are much more differences.
"I'm flattered that they picked out me in her life as such an interesting, charismatic character that they had to make a whole backstory about me," she said. "I never imagined I'd be Donna from That 70s Show. When I watch that part of the series, I watch it as a viewer. I don't say 'that's my life.'"
One similarity she talks about are Alex’s signature glasses on the show, which Wolters calls an "obvious giveaway” as her.
“There are hints of reality in the show, and maybe I'm just seeing them because I want to see them so much, but there are things that make me think 'Is Piper consulting on this? Is she telling them things?” she also said.
When it comes to the amount of sex we see on the Netflix show, Wolters said there’s not even close to the amount of sex happening in real-life prisons than what we see on the show.
She pointed out that if inmates get caught having sex, there are pretty serious consequences.
"There is sex occurring, but it's not happening in the showers without a shower curtain. if you get caught having sex, you go to solitary confinement. I never saw it. In fact, I might have stayed had that been the case. There'd be a line to get into prison if it were as fun as Orange Is the New Black shows it to be,” she said.
OITNB's third season will premiere June 12 on Netflix.
