Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman will be the latest movie stars to transition to the small screen. They will star in Big Little Lies, which has landed at HBO.
Witherspoon’s Pacific Standard and Kidman's Blossom Films nabbed the screen rights to Liane Moriarty’s best seller in August 2014. In November 2014, they decided to take it to television, with prolific TV writer/producer David E. Kelley joining and adapting the book.
The show drew interest from HBO and Netflix, with HBO winning out, reports The Hollywood Reporter.
Big Little Lies is about the mothers of three kindergartners, whose lives become intertwined and they are eventually linked to a murder.
Moriarty will be an executive producer on the series, along with Kelley, Witherspoon, Kidman, Pacific Standard’s Bruna Papandrea and Blossom Films’ Per Saari.
Both Kidman and Witherspoon have never had major roles on television before. They are also Oscar winners, with Kidman winning for The Hours and Witherspoon winning for Walk The Line.
The stars are also joining the ever-growing list of movie stars open to limited series projects. These allow the stars to make an impact on television while they don’t have to commit to long schedules and will still be able to make feature films.
Kelley’s long resume in television includes Ally McBeal, L.A. Law, Boston Public and The Crazy Ones.
