Let the party begin, at least the one at CBS. The network will be promoting Stephen Colbert’s takeover of The Late Show all summer and it all started today at the network’s upfront presentation for advertisers.
Before Colbert came on to the stage at Carnegie Hall, CBS showed a pre-taped sketch, which featured Colbert going on a journey to find himself, complete with a copy of Eat Pray Love. As E! News notes, that Colbert joked that one of his new hosting personalities could be “as a Kardashian.”
However, CBS president Les Moonves stepped in, telling Colbert, “You’re a white male comedian with a nice haircut and suit.” So, Colbert remembered that he’s a talk show host.
When Time finally walked on stage, he told the audience, “Please welcome the new host of the Late Show and the man who is talking right now saying these words–Stephen Colbert!” That was a possible jab to remind everyone that he’s not playing the same political pundit character he was on The Colbert Report.
According to Time, Colbert - minus the grey beard - joked that he’s perfect for CBS, the home of CSI, since “most of my show will be me solving crimes by zooming in on pubic hairs.”
CBS announced today that Colbert will take over The Late Show on Tuesday, Sept. 8. However, David Letterman’s last day is May 20, so the network will have a long time to build up excitement for Colbert. (Although they probably don’t need to.)
