Top 10 moments from 'Criminal Minds' episode 'Protection'

This week’s Criminal Minds took us into the mind of an unsub who was hunting people he believed were committing crimes. Throughout the episode, it seemed as though he was being encouraged to do what he needed to do to keep people safe by two friends of his, a mother and daughter named Patricia and Milena.

Throughout the episode, we see the case through his mind and what he feels he is doing. However, we also see the BAU’s side as they investigate to determine who is killing people and how to stop it from happening again.

When the episode ended, we got a look into how next week’s episode will play out for the season finale. Meg, Kate’s niece, and her friend, Markayla, unwittingly step into a situation that could put their lives in danger. We have to wait another week to see how this plays out, but until then, let’s look at the top moments from “Protection.”

10. Out for a run

The episode began with JJ and Morgan going for a job. They are having fun when Garcia calls to tell them about a case involving a murdered prostitute and john that match another murder based on ballistic evidence.

9. Headaches

The unsub, Danny Stokes, goes home dealing with bad headaches. His friend, Milena, comes to comfort him and rub his head since it is so painful for him. We can see he is the unsub since he is covered in blood and it is surprising to see that Milena is not phased by his appearance.

8. Victims

The BAU works together to try and figure out who the unsub is targeting. The first victims were two johns and a prostitute, so it appears that the killer is going after people he feels are committing crimes. They go to look for any other prostitute who may have been with their first victim.

7. No cooperation

When Kate and JJ talk to a prostitute named Lizette, they can see she recognizes their first victim, Gary Fisher, but she refuses to talk. She appears nervous and scared, but they are unable to get her to cooperate.

6. Reasons

We learn through the interactions Danny has with Milena and Patricia that his mother was murdered and he is going out hunting to try and find the person who did it. He believes the man got away with it and keeps trying to justify the murders he is committing.

5. Eyewitness

The team finds an eyewitness when a young woman’s boyfriend is murdered. When this murder occurred, it appeared as though the woman was the victim of an attempted rape in Danny’s eyes. However, it turns out that it wasn’t the case and her boyfriend was innocent when he was gunned down. The shaken young woman is able to provide the team with a sketch of their unsub.

4. Truth

JJ finds Lizette waiting for a bus and goes to pick her up. She establishes a rapport with her over their shared commonality of having sons. Eventually, Lizette tearfully admits she had been with Gary Fisher the night he died and had gotten away. She was afraid to say anything for fear of having her son taken away.

3. Profiling the unsub

After figuring out that the unsub seems to be changing his targets and going after innocent people when he thinks they are committing crimes, the team deduces he may be suffering from schizophrenia. This lead allows them to look for information that leads to Danny Stokes. It turns out that the women we saw him with, Patricia, and Milena were reported missing and that his mother had died in a burglary.

2. Showdown

Reid, a police officer, Morgan, and JJ go to Danny’s house in an attempt to apprehend them. At first, it appears that Danny is holding Patricia and Milena hostage. However, as they hear Danny rambling, Morgan and JJ comment that no other voice can be heard. It turns out Patricia and Milena were actually delusions in Danny’s mind and had been killed just days before.

1. In trouble

The episode ended with Markayla and Meg, Kate’s niece, getting ready to meet with who they think is an attractive guy named Bobby to go to a concert. Meg is feeling uneasy, but they both are looking forward to meeting him. However, his mother is supposedly picking them up and when she looks at them through the mirror, it appears this is actually a kidnapping.
