Let’s be honest here: Most video game movies so far have been pretty bad. Some of the most prominent examples have been Super Mario Brothers, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, and Doom, all of which, at the very least, were not great. Even the video game movies that were more positively reviewed, like Resident Evil, Silent Hill and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, tend to be talked about in the context of “it’s not bad for a video game movie,” rather than it being a legitimately good movie in its own right.

That begs the question: are we ever going to get a video game film adaptation that is legitimately great? We reported recently that Michael Fassbender's Assassin’s Creed movie is going into production soon for a December 2016 release date. That’s a video game with a really compelling story and interesting characters, and the movie has lots of amazing talent behind it. Could that be the one?

If not, there are actually plenty of other video game movies currently in development. Some of them, like Assassin’s Creed, are games with an interesting story line that could make for a pretty solid adaptation. With others, it’s kind of baffling that anyone plans to make a movie out of it, as the game has practically no plot at all. Some of these are in production and will actually hit theaters soon, while others we may not see for quite some time, but here are 10 video game movies on the horizon.
