The Merriam-Webster Dictionary added a slew of new words this week, although they aren’t actually new to many of us. We’ve been using many of these words online for years, but they are just now getting some “official” recognition.
The dictionary editors added 1,700 words this week and added new meanings for 700 words. In addition they have also updated entries for around 200 of the most-searched words.
Many of the new words were created fairly recently for use on the web. Words like “photobomb,” “clickbait” and “meme” didn’t really exist before the web, at least in their current usage.
Some of the words are even abbreviations. “NSFW” and “WTF” have been used so much that they had to join the dictionary. “POTUS” is also in the dictionary, since it has become an easy way to refer to the President of the U.S. easily online.
