Tony nominee and Emmy winner Laurie Metcalf will star in Misery, the Broadway production that will mark movie star Bruce Willis’ Broadway debut. Metcalf is replacing Elizabeth Marvel.

The surprising project was first announced in March. It is based on the Stephen King novel and the 1990 film adaptation, which earned Kathy Bates an Oscar.

Willis will play a successful novelist who is terrorized by his biggest fan, Annie, after she saves him from a car crash. Marvel was supposed to play Annie, but the House of Cards star’s schedule got in the way.

The New York Times confirmed that Metcalf quickly stepped in so the show will be able to start at the Broadhurst Theater for a limited run this fall. Previews start on Oct. 22 and the opening is set for Nov. 15.

Metcalf won three consecutive Emmys for Roseanne and was nominated for two Tony Awards. As for Willis, this is the latest attempt by the actor to show some versatility, as he’s also joined his first Woody Allen movie.

Will Frears is directing the production of Misery. William Goldman, who penned the script for the film, also wrote the stage version.
