Aquarius might not be getting great numbers, but the show has surprisingly earned a second season. NBC picked the David Duchovny period drama up for another season, citing a heavy digital presence.

The series, which stars Duchovny as a detective on a case that leads him face-to-face with Charles Manson (played by Gethin Anthony), debuted on May 28 with a two-hour episode. Emma Dumont and Grey Damon co-star.

NBC made the startling decision to post all episodes of the series online after the premiere for a month. You can still catch the episodes at NBC.com and On Demand.

“With its riveting drama and innovative release strategy, Aquarius has excited the critics, hooked millions of viewers and energized our summer,” NBC Entertainment PResident Jennifer Salke said in a statement. “It’s no secret that the way people watch television is evolving, so we took a unique approach to how we delivered Aquarius and it’s driven some record numbers for NBC Digital and helped us reach viewers who might have otherwise overlooked a great summer drama.”

NBC Said that the show had the most views ever in the first 24 hours after its premiere on NBC.com and the NBC App. After 28 days overall, the show premiere has the second-most views for another premiere episode on NBC’s digital platforms, behind only The Blacklist.

While the show only averages a 1.2 18-49 rating and 5.8 million viewers upon initial airing, the show’s digital presence clearly pleased the network. The show also experiences a boost with DVR viewing.
