There’s some incredible news for anyone who thinks that Tangled is really better than Frozen. While Disney’s Rapunzel tale seemed to get lost in the Frozen hullabaloo over the past two years, she’s actually getting her own TV series before Elsa is.
Disney announced this morning that the Tangled series will debut on the Disney Channel in 2017.
The studio also brought back several members of the 2010 film’s creative team, including Mandy Moore, who voices Rapunzel; and Zachary Levi, who provides the voice of Flynn Rider. Alan Menken and Glenn Slater are writing new songs for the show and animator Glen Keane’s daughter Clare Keane is also back.
A new character will join Rapunzel, Flynn, Maximus and Pascal. Cassandra is a “tough-as-nails handmaiden, who becomes Rapunzel’s confidant,” according to the studio.
The series will take place after the film, but before the 2012 short Tangled ever After.
While most people seem to forget about it already, Tangled was a big hit when it was released in November 2010, grossing over $591.7 million worldwide. Of course, Frozen doubled that, but that shouldn’t take away from Tangled’s fun and originality. It was directed by Nathan Greno and Byron Howard. Menken and Slater were nominated for an Oscar for “I See The Light,” but somehow the film wasn’t nominated for Best Animated Feature. (It wouldn’t have beaten Toy Story 3, but a nomination would have been nice.)
