When Ed Sheeran released his 2014 album X fans started to wonder who had inspired the single "Don't." The lyrics focused on a girl who had been leading Sheeran on before having a romantic relationship with someone else. Many fans thought that the woman in question was once rumored girlfriend, Ellie Goulding.
Turns out that Goulding and Sheeran have never dated according to the "Burn" singer. During an interview with Elle UK Goulding explained that she had gone out on a few dates with Niall Horan but was never in a relationship with Sheeran. "I have absolutely no idea where that came from and why it was turned into such a big thing," said Goulding.
Sheeran had hinted that the two had more than a friendship developing after the 2013 MTV VMA's. Relationship rumors started flying after the two were photographed holding hands during the ceremony. The "A Team" singer explained more about their relationship during a radio interview, "I mean, normal people don’t hold hands if they’re just friends. It was going on. And now it’s not," said Sheeran.
Goulding is currently in a relationship with musician Dougie Poynter. The two started dating back in February, US Magazine added.
