Helen Mirren, one of the most talented actresses of Hollywood, is infuriated with how the movie industry treats older women.
In a recent interview at The Wrap’s first New York Power breakfast, the 70-year-old actress was asked about her thoughts on a comment Maggie Gyllenhaal made regarding sexism and ageism.
The 37-year-old actress was told that she was “too old to play the lover of a man who was 55.” Mirren was not surprised.
“F**king outrageous! It’s ridiculous. “Honestly, so annoying. So annoying and ‘twas ever thus.”
The Academy award winner described how it was unfair that characters like James Bond can get older while the girls get younger.
Mirren also talked about being considered a sex symbol and how that can pigeonhole an actress notes The Guardian. “I don’t like the word sexual,” says Mirren. “There are people who are sexual, and others who are less sexual. But there’s got to be another word. ‘Sexual’ is so limiting.”
“Being powerful is so much more interesting than being beautiful,” she concludes.
