We've been hearing for months that MTV was planning to change up the iconic Ghostface mask for their upcoming Scream TV show, and we now have our first official look at the new design.
It does look somewhat similar to the original mask, while being distinct enough. It seems like sort of a blend between the Ghostface mask and Michael Myers' mask from Halloween, with maybe even a bit of Jason's hockey mask in there. Indeed, executive producer Jill Blotevogel said that's exactly the blend they were going for with this new one.
So why didn't they use the Ghostface mask? Basically, they wanted to do something different, and felt that it would be disingenuous to use the Scream mask but none of the actual movie characters.
"If you were to have that mask in a television series, but you weren’t following any of the characters [from the original], I believe that would be misleading the audience,” executive producer Jaime Paglia told Entertainment Weekly.
Director of the films Wes Craven apparently has approved of the new mask, saying that he finds it to be cool and scary. He also teased us by saying that the new mask does actually tie into the films in some way.
MTV's Scream follows a completely new set of characters but with the same general premise of the movies, with a masked killer on the loose and following the mystery of who it could be, as we've previously reported. It will premiere on MTV on June 30.
