Kendrick Lamar gave high school students at New Jersey’s High Tech High School quite a surprise when he showed up for a surprise visit.

The reason Lamar made an appearance at this particular school is because their poetry club analyzes his album To Pimp a Butterfly in connection with Toni Morrison's novel The Bluest Eye.

"I was intrigued that somebody other than myself can articulate and break down the concepts of To Pimp a Butterfly almost better than I can. That let me know he's a true lover of music,” Lamar explained, Rolling Stone reports.

Lamar had his manager reach out to the school to arrange a visit when the club’s organizer, Brian Moohey’s blog post about incorporating the rapper’s music into his curriculum went viral.

During his visit he freestyled, they recited poetry and frankly, the students impressed Lamar.

“I didn't think I made [To Pimp a Butterfly] for 16-year-olds," he said, adding listening to the students’ thoughts on it “lets me know that their thought process is just as advanced as mine, even if I'm 10, 15 years older."
