Lady Gaga and New York Governor Andrew Cuomo joined forces to publish an essay on his bill. The bill was created to prevent sexual assault on college campuses and protect college students.

Gaga and Cuomo wrote the essay to gain support from the public in order to convince lawmakers to pass the bill. Gaga and Cuomo write that “the likelihood that college students are not getting the assistance and support they deserve is heartbreaking, and the knowledge that sexual predators are left free to attack again is criminal.” They hope that the bill will make significant and positive changes for students.

The essay summarizes certain aspects of the bill that will help lead to change. According to the Governor’s website the legislation will not only create a statewide amnesty policy, but will also form a Sexual Violence Victim/Survivor Bill of Rights. The document will be given to all students and it will inform them of their legal rights.

Andrew Cuomo created this bill back in February to deal with the glaring issue of sexual assault within college campuses. His work has gained support from singer Lady Gaga and together they wrote the essay about these horrific injustices. They addressed how colleges have covered up many rape charges in order to avoid negative publicity and how Cuomo’s bill will help to ensure that every victim will receive justice.

Lady Gaga, a strong advocate for sexual equality, talked about her experience with sexual assault in the past. In an interview with the Rolling Stone, Lady Gaga reveled in December 2014 that she was assaulted by her producer when 19.

“It didn’t affect me as much right after as it did about four or five years later,” she explains. “It hit me so hard. I was so traumatized by it that I was like, ‘Just keep going,’ because I just had to get out of there.”
