Laverne Cox has opened up about the differences between her own transition and Caitlyn Jenner’s transition in Entertainment Weekly’s LGBT Issue.

Cox, who has become the first transgender woman to be nominated for an Emmy, grace the cover of Time and more, said she’s grateful she got to experience her transition in private.

The Orange is the New Black star told EW, “This is why I’m so grateful that I had the luxury of transitioning in private.” She was referring to the focus on on Jenner’s surgeries over anything else.

“Because when you transition in the public eye, the transition becomes the story,” she continued. “I’m always disturbed when I see conversations about trans people that focus on surgery.”

However, despite the sudden media frenzy around Jenner since her Vanity Fair cover came out, Cox thinks “Caitlyn will transcend this moment.”

After Jenner's Vanity Fair cover came out, Cox took to Tumblr to comment on it, urging people not to focus on the physical aspects of Jenner's transition but "her heart and soul, the way she has allowed the world into her vulnerabilities.”
