Orange Is The New Black actress Laverne Cox, who graced last year’s cover of Time magazine, wrote a note on her Tumblr page addressing Caitlyn Jenner’s Vanity Fair cover shoot.
In her post, Cox began by discussing how the cover comes just “a year and three days” after her own appearance on Time with the headline “The Transgender Tipping Point.” In her essay, Cox described how the supportive and loving comments Caitlyn has received from family, friends, and fans made her feel “moved.”
She wrote her note to focus on not only the physical beauty people could see when they looked at Jenner, but also to say that what she also found to be beautiful was “her heart and soul, the way she has allowed the world into her vulnerabilities.”
Cox pointed out that for most transgender individuals, they may not be able to hold those beauty standards that are considered “cisnormative.” Cisgender is a word to describe individuals who identify with their sex they were at birth.
Her essay also went into detail about how her #TransIsBeautiful movement was made to celebrate every unique aspect of a person who is transgender.
As previously reported, Cox appeared on the cover of Time magazine for their June 2014 issue. She spoke to Time magazine and told them, “There’s not just one trans story. There’s not just one trans experience.”
She echoed these words in her essay when she wrote, “This is why we need diverse media representations of trans folks to multiply trans narratives in the media and depict our beautiful diversities.”
