Patrick Stewart is siding with bakery owners in Ireland who refused to make a cake with a pro-gay message on it last month.

In a new interview, he said about the bakers who would not write “Support Gay Marriage" on a cake with Sesame Street’s Bert and Ernie on it, that they have the right to decide.

On BBC's Newsnight, Stewart said, "I found myself on the side of the bakers,” The Telegraph reports.

The Christian bakers were found guilty of discrimination and fined for it. Stewart now says he “would support” their refusal.

"It was not because it was a gay couple that they objected, it was not because they were celebrating some sort of marriage or an agreement between them,” he said. “It was the actual words on the cake they objected to. Because they found the words offensive. I would support their rights to say no, this is personally offensive to my beliefs, I will not do it."

Huffington Post UK notes Stewart himself is a supporter of the LGBT community.

In the past, he was incorrectly identified as gay although he’s married to a woman. He’s been seen holding hands with his X-Men co-star Ian McKellan and said he was “utterly flattered” by rumors he’s gay.

He married his wife Sunny Ozell in 2013.
