Rapper Lupe Fiasco posted a brilliant letter to white supremacy in the wake of photos that appeared of suspected Charleston shooter Dylann Roof.
On his Instagram page, Fiasco made three posts that began with “Dear White Supremacy.” The first photo shows Roof burning a United States flag and beneath, Fiasco went into detail about why white supremacy isn’t “that supreme.” He also brought up the appearance of smallpox back when Europeans first came to the Americas and discussed how every single culture has the same universal type of activities such as music and food.
The second portion of his letter detailed how different cultures collaborated with one another and Fiasco continued, “We are supreme as a spectrum of colors in collaboration.” He used Steve Jobs as an example, saying that while he was white, many people from different cultural backgrounds helped to build Apple.
Finally, Fiasco ended it by writing that the identity of white supremacy is only validated in connection with other races and said, “Without us there is no white supremacy because there would be nothing to be supreme over!”
This weekend, a website was discovered with a manifesto that was believed to be written by Roof, ABC News reported. Authorities are working to determine the manifesto’s authenticity before making a definitive determination that the photos and manifesto were from Roof.
The website reportedly showed Roof holding a weapon and one showed him with the Confederate flag. The writings in the manifesto also indicated a preference for white superiority and segregation.
Roof was arrested and confessed to killing nine individuals in the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina. He made a court appearance via video monitor on Friday and will make another appearance in court on Oct. 23.
