The New England Patriots released linebacker Brandon Spikes on Monday due to the Massachusetts State Police investigating an accident involving the linebacker's vehicle.
Spikes’ Mercedes Maybach was found abandon in the median of Interstate 495 in Foxborough with front-end damage around 3:30 am on Sunday.
Around the same time, police got a call that a car in the same area as Spikes abandoned car had been rear-ended by another vehicle. It is unknown who was driving Spikes car, but they reported through OnStar that they hit a deer. Police are investigating whether the incidents are related and no charges have been filed, according to the Associated Press. Police have contacted Spikes about the incident.
“The investigation will seek to determine whether there is any connection between the reported incidents,” State police spokesman David Procopio said, CBS Sports notes. “No connection has yet been definitively established.”
Spikes began his career playing for the Patriots from 2010 to 2013. He signed a one-year contract with the Buffalo Bills last year. In 66 games he has 384 tackles, two sacks, two interceptions, seven forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery, according to USA Today.
Last month he re-signed with the Patriots to a one-year deal.
Releasing Spikes will cost the Patriots $25,000, which was his signing bonus and the only money that was guaranteed to him.
