The New York Yankees activated infielder Brendan Ryan from the 60-day disabled list Tuesday night.
During a spring training game in April Ryan suffered a Grade 2 right calf strain. He was placed on the disabled list three days later. Last month he pulled a hamstring while running the bases and left a game early after he aggravated the hamstring. Ryan has started seven rehab games for Single-A Tampa, Double-A Trenton, and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre, hitting .273, according to the New York Daily News. He was called up by Yankees general manager Brian Cashman.
“Honestly it felt like getting called up for the first time when I got called by (GM Brian Cashman),” Ryan said. “I’m hopefully here to stay.”
Ryan is in the final year of his two-year, $5 million contract with the Yankees. He hasn’t played this season due to being on the DL. Last year with the Yankees he hit .167, according to the Associated Press. He was in the Yankees starting lineup for Wednesday’s game against the Washington Nationals.
The Yankees sent rookie outfielder Ramon Flores to Triple-A to make room on the roster for Ryan.
