A model who appeared on a reality television show is now a Princess after marrying a Prince from Sweden.
According to AFP, Sofia Hellqvist married Prince Carl Philip on Saturday in front of a cheering crowd in Stockholm. Well-wishers congratulated the couple as they rode through the streets in a horse and carriage.
The royal wedding was televised and Sofia walked down the aisle to the song “Father in Heaven” by Enya. Their wedding held 550 guests and included Prince Edward from Britain, Japan’s Princess Takamado, and Queen Mathilde from Belgium.
In a dress by Ida Sjostedt, who is a fashion designer from Sweden, the new Princess Sofia looked stunning in a white lace and crepe-silk dress.
The couple met in 2010 during lunch with friends where Princess Sofia reportedly said in an interview that upon meeting, the two of them clicked.
Prince Carl Philip is the son of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia and is third in line to the throne. He is also known as the Duke of Varmland.
CNN reported that while the media in Sweden focused on Princess Sofia’s interesting past as a reality star on Sweden’s Paradise Hotel and posting for a Swedish men’s magazine, she actually has done work in business related matters after studying business in New York.
She has done charitable work and even founded a nonprofit organization known as Project Playground to aid children in South Africa.
The couple announced their engagement a year ago in June, saying in a statement, “We are looking forward to a summer wedding in the middle of June, when Sweden is extremely beautiful.”
