Queen Elizabeth might have to leave her home, Buckingham Palace, at least for a period of time while renovations get underway.
The famed palace, which the Queen has called home for decades, reportedly needs over $200 million worth of work done. A 10-year property maintenance plan has been created by an in-house palace team but officials say a third party of experts will look it over.
The BBC reports Buckingham Palace needs new plumbing and wiring. Asbestos has also been found, so that will need to be removed while the Queen moves to another one of her many residences.
The palace also hasn’t been redecorated since the Queen moved in back in 1952, so it will likely get a makeover too. The palace has been the official London residence for royals since 1837.
“The initial estimate for the refurbishment of Buckingham Palace looks like £150m,” a source told The Independent.
The majority of the renovations will be funded by taxpayers, who contribute £35.7 million a year to the monarchy.
