Tim Curry, who suffered a stroke in 2012, made a rare public appearance at a Tony Awards event in Los Angeles last night to pick up an honorary award. While frail, he recently said in an interview that he is “doing well.”

Curry, 69, attended the Tony Awards Viewing Party in Los Angeles, where he received the Actors Fund Lifetime Achievement Award, notes The Daily Mail. He has to use a wheelchair to get around.

Prior to the event, he did an interview with Los Angeles Magazine, which noted that his speech has slowed. However, the Rocky Horror Picture Show star said that he is doing well and was looking forward to the Actors Fund event.

“I’m doing well and I’m looking forward to it,” he said on June 3. “I’ve done a few benefits for the Actors Fund and I think it’s a marvelous organization. I hope not to have to use it.”

Curry, who also starred in My Favorite Year and Spamalot on Broadway, explained that it’s important to him to keep his sense of humor, despite his struggles. “Vital. Absolutely vital. It’s not tough to maintain. It is just part of my DNA,” he said.

Although Curry’s stroke happened in 2012, it wasn’t reported on until May 2013. His rep later explained that the stroke happened a year before it was reported.

The Actors Fund is an organization that provides financial and medical assistant to actors in need.
