This week’s column is filled with comedy, action and plenty of drama. Sleeping with Other People follows a kind womanizer and a chronic cheater, who form a platonic friendship that helps each change while a mutual attraction forms. Dragon Blade chronicles a time in ancient China where the Roman emperor and a group of trained warriors fought for control of a key trade route. Sicario revolves around an FBI agent, who joins a government task force assigned to fight the continuing war against drugs. All three films contain top notch celebrities in their casts, which is sure to bring throngs of their fans to their local theaters on each movie’s opening day. In addition, each movie has distinctive plot elements that will intrigue moviegoers to go see them. To top it off, certain celebrities in each movie are taking on roles way out of their comfort zones and usual movie genres, which could please or disappoint their fans.
Sleeping with Other People is a comedy starring Saturday Night Live alum Jason Sudeikis, Community’s Alison Brie, Natasha Lyonne, Amanda Peet, Parks and Recreation’s Adam Scott and Marc Blucas. The plot follows Jake (Sudeikis,) an amiable womanizer and Lainey (Brie,) a habitual cheater, who embark on a platonic friendship that helps each start to alter their ways, but then a deep, mutual attraction begins to develop. The film’s trailer shows how both seem to have a sex addiction and form a platonic friendship after attending a meeting that’s supposed to help. Yet, as their friendship grows, each doesn’t realize that both are developing genuine feelings for the other. It opens in theaters on Friday, September 11.
Dragon Blade is a historical action adventure flick starring Jackie Chan, John Cusack and Adrien Brody. It takes place during the Han Dynasty in China as the ruthless Roman leader, Tiberius (Brody) wishes to claim the Silk Road, a crucial trade route, as part of his empire. Yet, General Lucius (Cusack) along with Huo An (Chan) and his band of trained soldiers, who have defected from Tiberius’ army, also wish to claim the road for themselves. This historical film’s trailer illustrates the sheer brutality of Tiberius and how far each side will go to claim the important road as their property. It opens in theaters on Friday, September 4.
Sicario is a dramatic mystery crime motion picture starring Emily Blunt, The Walking Dead’s Jon Bernthal, Josh Brolin, Benicio Del Toro, Burn Notice’s Jeffrey Donovan and Victor Garber. It revolves around Kate Macer (Blunt,) an FBI agent, assigned to an elite government task force to fight the war on drugs especially along the US/Mexico border. Led by a consultant with an uncertain past, Macer and the team go on a covert mission that compels her to question everything she knows in order to survive. The trailer for this pulse-pounding thriller displays how Blunt’s character puts her life on the line and in the end must choose between what’s right and wrong as she fights for her life while also fighting the war on drugs. It opens in theaters on Friday, September 18.
