Michael Chiklis is ready to play a police officer, but he’s leaving the world of The Shield far behind. The actor is joining Gotham as a series regular in season two.
Chiklis will star as Captain Nathaniel Barnes, TVLine reports. Producers for the show told the site that Barnes will be a “law and order zealot” who doesn’t care about making enemies on both sides of the law. He takes a mentor-like figure for Gordon (Ben McKenzie) and becomes a “strong ally.” However, one day, they might find each other on opposite ends of a gun.
Gotham, which was created by The Mentalist’s Bruno Heller, will kick off its second season on Monday, Sept. 21 on Fox at 8 p.m. The new season is expected to focus more on the villains a grown up Batman will eventually face. Cameron Monaghan teased fans earlier this month about becoming The Joker and he even crashed the SDCC panel.
As for Chiklis, he won a Golden Globe for his performance on The Shield in 2003 and was just seen on American Horror Story: Freak Show. Of course, he does have some comic book credentials, playing The Thing in Fox’s first Fantastic Four movies. He also starred in ABC’s short-lived superhero series No Ordinary Family.
