American BASE jumper Ian Flanders died during a plunge while filming a documentary in Turkey on Tuesday.

CBS News reported that Flanders, a Southern California native, was in eastern Turkey for the International Culture and Nature Sports Festival and was attempting jumps from a cliff over the Karasu River.

"It was a gorgeous flight, a beautiful view of the town. You get to kind of fly over, fly over the town," he told a local television crew after his first jump went well. "We landed in the river, which was also actually kind of fun."

While cameras rolled Flanders attempted another leap, but things went horribly wrong. He pulled on his parachute cord but the lines got tangled and he fell to his death in the river below.

He was taken to a local hospital but it was too late.

People noted that Flanders’ tragic death comes just two months after Dean Potter, another BASE jumper, died during an aerial flight in Yosemite Valley. In all, 264 jumper have died since the record keeping began.
