The wildly popular British sci-fi show Doctor Who returns for its ninth season this fall, but there are still plenty of more adventures to come after that.
According to Radio Times, the BBC has renewed Doctor Who for Season 10. The news was first revealed in the BBC Worldwide Annual Review and then later confirmed by a BBC spokesperson.
Steven Moffat will be returning as showrunner for the new season, as his contract extends up to Season 10. It's not clear who of the cast might return, though, especially Jenna Coleman. Season 9 will be Coleman's third season as the Doctor's companion, and companions typically only stay on the show for a few seasons. Rose was with the show for two seasons, Martha for one, Donna for one and Amy for three. So if Coleman were to stay for Season 10, she would be the longest running companion in the rebooted series.
Last year, there were rumors circulating that Jenna Coleman would be leaving the show during the Christmas special, but those were quickly denied and the actress ended up returning for another season, as we previously reported.
Assuming Peter Capaldi returns, Season 10 will be his third season as the Doctor. It seems pretty likely that he'll be back, given that the last two Doctors each stayed for three seasons. Given that track record, though, Season 10 might very well be Capaldi's final bow.
Doctor Who will return for its ninth season on September 19.
