The NFL decided to ruin some players’ July 4 weekends, suspending a handful for violating the substance abuse policy. The biggest name among the suspensions was San Diego Chargers tight end Antonio Gates, who received four games.
In addition to Gates, the NFL also suspended Dallas Cowboys linebacker Rolando McClain for four games; Green Bay Packers pass rusher Datone Jones for one game; and New York Jets defensive end Sheldon Richardson for four games. All four players were suspended for violating the league's Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse.
Gates is a 12-year veteran who has played his entire career with the Chargers. He’s played in all 16 games for the past two seasons and had 821 yards receiving from 69 receptions with 12 TDs last season. He is an eight-time Pro Bowler. Quarterback Philip Rivers is definitely going to miss throwing to him for the first four games of the season. The Chargers did miss the playoffs last year with a 9-7 record.
“In my 12 years in the NFL, I have taken tremendous pride in upholding the integrity of the NFL shield and all that it entails. I have taken extreme care of my body with a holistic approach and never taken any substance that was illegal or banned by the NFL,” Gates said in a statement.
“In an effort to recover from a long season and although I was unaware at the time, I regret to confirm that I tested positive for a substance that is currently on the NFL banned substance list,” Gates continued. “As an NFL veteran and team leader, I should have done my due diligence to ensure that what I was taking for recovery was within the NFL guidelines. I have always believed that ignorance is no excuse when it comes to these issues, and I take full responsibility for my actions.”
Gates then apologized to the team and his fans.
