The Christian Dior fashion label is in hot water after signing a 14-year-old Israeli model to front their new adult line.
Sofia Mechetner has been signed to a $265,000 contract, according to FOX News, which entails walking in a Dior show, in a see-through gown, topless underneath.
The Council of Fashion Designers of America believes this breaks the 2007 guidelines which say models should not be under the age of 16. The CFDA also formed a health initiative to address global issues in the fashion world, such as whether or not models are unhealthily thin and what restrictions should come from such cases.
“In 2007, the CFDA established its Health Initiative which strongly recommends that designers do not use models under the age of 16," the CFDA said in a statement. "The CFDA communicates this message to its members prior to the spring and fall castings, and there has been great acceptance of these guidelines. We also support the New York State Legislature law stating that all models under 18 must be treated as child performers.”
Earlier this month, supermodel Cindy Crawford’s daughter, Kaia, has signed with IMG Models. She is only 13.
Molly Fletcher, who began modeling at 18 years old, said that young girls should join the world of modeling that young.
“I don’t think it's good to use underage models, they haven't fully developed physically or mentally," Fletcher said. "So, how could they represent a woman at a young age, let alone deal with the pressures of the industry?”
But Mechetner does not seem to think there is anything wrong with posing topless at her age.
"Fashion nudity is about art and not about sexuality," Sofia told The Jerusalem Post.
