Though it was initially pitched as a limited series, Top of the Lake will be returning for a second season, and now its lead actress is officially back on board.
According to IndieWire, Elisabeth Moss will be returning for Season 2 of Top of the Lake, which will be shooting in Sydney, Australia this December. Moss' character Detective Robin Griffin will be investigating a case in Hong Kong this time, possibly going back and forth between Hong Kong and Sydney.
Co-creators Jane Campion and Gerard Lee will be returning as writers for the second season, and Lee is expected to co-direct with a partner who has not yet been named by the network.
A show that was imagined as a mini-series returning for an unexpected second season isn't uncommon lately, with True Detective and Fargo both receiving a Season 2 despite being self-contained stories. But what is uncommon is for the main actors to return for the new episodes, as both True Detective and Fargo replaced their entire cast for the second outing.
The first season of Top of the Lake aired on the Sundance Channel in 2013 to widespread critical acclaim. Elisabeth Moss herself won for best actress in a miniseries or TV movie at the Golden Globes and Critics' Choice Awards, and she was nominated for the equivalent award at that year's Emmys. The network renewed the show for a second season back in October, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Sundance hasn't revealed a release date for the new episodes, but Top of the Lake will likely return in late 2016.
