Can you imagine walking into theater class on your first day of high school and finding out that Jon Hamm is your teacher? Ellie Kemper can, and she will tell you all about it.

Kemper thought Hamm “was a wonderful teacher.” According to People Hamm and Kemper attended the same high school in Missouri, and after college Hamm returned to teach for a year.

During the Television Critics Association panel for her Netflix series Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Kemper said, “I was in ninth grade and he taught me the improv section of my theater class, and everyone loved him.”

When asked about working with her old teacher on Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Kemper said, “When they told us that he would be playing the reverend, it was fantastic. But I was a little scared. I think there’s still a teacher-student dynamic, and acting with him was a little bit nerve-racking just because I felt like he was still grading me on some level. But he’s a wonderful man and it was a lot of fun.”

Kemper also let it slip that Hamm “was not ugly,” way back when, which is the least surprising news we’ve heard all day.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is a Netflix series about a girl who was rescued from a doomsday cult and is starting her life over in New York City. Kemper plays the Kimmy Schmidt and Hamm plays the reverend that held her captive. Tina Fey and Robert Carlock created the series. Season two will air on Netflix next spring. The show was nominated for an Emmy in the category of Outstanding Comedy Series.
