David Letterman had some good news this morning that should make his retirement more enjoyable. The Late Show earned an Emmy nomination for his final season, but he has some tough competition.
Although Letterman has five Emmys, this is the first time the Late Show is up for Outstanding Variety Talk Show since 2009, when the category was still called Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Series. The show hasn’t won the award since 1994, in recognition of his first season on CBS.
Letterman’s final show aired in May.
While the Television Academy might want to award Letterman in recognition of his influence on comedy, they would have to pass over some worthy nominees. ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live and NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon were also nominated, as was Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.
Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report, which was hosted by Letterman’s successor, Stephen Colbert, was also nominated. The show won in this category last year.
The final nominee is a wild card. John Oliver, another Daily Show vet, earned his first nomination for Last Week Tonight. The weekly topical show airs on HBO.
The nominees for writing in a variety series were Comedy Central’s Inside Amy Schumer, Key & Peele, The Daily Show and Colbert and HBO’s Last Week Tonight.
You can check out the other nominees right here. The Emmys are on Sept. 20 on Fox.
